The Tool Selection Problem
The most common and expensive mistake in audit technology investment is selecting tools based on aspiration rather than current capability. An enterprise-grade continuous monitoring platform purchased before the team has the skills to configure it, the data access to feed it, and the workflow discipline to act on its outputs will sit unused. The investment produces a demo, not a capability.
The alternative is not to wait. The Four-Stage Technology Pathway
Each stage builds the capability that makes the next stage viable. Moving forward before the current stage is operational is the most common reason audit technology investments fail to produce returns.
Goal: Standardize data preparation. Establish repeatable extract-transform-load processes for the most common audit data sources. Build the habit of population-level thinking before investing in population-level tools.
Microsoft alignment: Power BI is the natural starting point for organizations already in the Microsoft ecosystem. It connects directly to Excel, SharePoint, and Teams -- tools the team already uses -- without requiring new infrastructure.
If Stage 1 tools are already in place and producing repeatable outputs, this stage is complete. Begin the assessment at Stage 2. The diagnostic steps at the top of this page -- inventorying existing workflows, mapping gaps, and auditing what the ERP offers natively -- still apply regardless of entry stage.
Goal: Move from manually prepared data to automated, repeatable analytics workflows. Build the first continuous monitoring routines. Reduce time from data request to audit-ready output.
Important: Training investment at this stage is significant and must be budgeted explicitly. Tools at this level are only as effective as the team's ability to use them.
If a dedicated analytics platform is already deployed and the team is running repeatable, scheduled workflows, this stage is complete. Begin the assessment at Stage 3.
Goal: Data flows to audit automatically rather than requiring manual extraction. Monitoring runs on a schedule. Exception reports surface without an analyst triggering them. The audit plan is informed by continuous signals rather than annual risk assessments alone.
Microsoft alignment: Power BI dashboards consuming SAP DataSphere outputs keep the visualization layer within the enterprise Microsoft standard while drawing from validated ERP data.
For functions operating at this stage, the investment question often shifts from new platforms to closing specific capability gaps -- activating native ERP monitoring modules, deploying cross-platform transaction monitoring for spend categories that span multiple systems, or integrating AI-assisted analytics into existing workflows. Each of these extends the monitoring footprint without replacing the infrastructure already in place.
Goal: Anomaly detection runs continuously within the ERP environment without requiring data extraction. Machine learning adapts detection patterns as transaction behavior evolves. Audit receives alerts rather than running queries.
Native ERP advantage: Native monitoring modules draw from the system's own validated data model, eliminating the extraction and validation problem that plagues intermediary data workflows. For S/4HANA environments, SAP Business Integrity Screening provides out-of-the-box automated controls for procure-to-pay, order-to-cash, and record-to-report processes with outputs compatible with Power BI. Equivalent native monitoring capabilities exist for Oracle and Microsoft Dynamics environments.

Shrinkage monitoring tells you where inventory is disappearing. Theft investigation tells you whether human behavior caused it. The gap between those two questions is an analytics design problem, not a vendor problem -- and it requires layering three data populations that most monitoring routines treat separately.
The first population is inventory adjustment records from the WMS or ERP: what was adjusted, how much, when, and by whom. The second is access and badge log data: who was present in the warehouse or branch during the adjustment window. The third is shift and schedule data from the HR or workforce management system: who was scheduled, who was actually on premises, and whether the personnel picture matches the adjustment record.
When shrinkage concentrates at the intersection of a specific time window, a specific location, and a consistent set of personnel -- and when that concentration persists across multiple inventory periods -- the pattern is the finding. That pattern does not require a vendor. It requires read access to three systems and an Alteryx workflow that joins them.

The category is growing quickly, and the realistic entry point is lower than most audit leaders expect.
Describe the detection logic you want in plain English: "Flag any inventory adjustment over $500 that occurs between 8pm and 6am where the adjusting user also processed the original receipt." A capable AI model returns working formula, SQL query, or Alteryx workflow logic that a non-developer can implement directly. This removes the dependency on a data science team or IT developer for moderately complex analytics work. The practical ceiling is higher than most teams have tested. Treat it as a junior developer who works in every language simultaneously and never gets tired of revision requests.
Strongest fit for teams with strong audit instincts but limited coding experience. The skill being developed is learning to describe what you want precisely -- which is itself a valuable audit competency.
Microsoft Fabric is the natural next layer for teams already using Power BI who are ready to move toward more complex, scheduled, or real-time monitoring. It combines data engineering, data science notebooks, and reporting in a single platform, with OneLake providing a unified data store that all workloads share. Copilot generates PySpark code, SQL queries, and KQL queries from natural language prompts -- meaning an auditor can describe a detection routine in plain English and Copilot drafts the code. As of 2025, Copilot is available across all paid Fabric SKUs.
Best for teams that have outgrown what Alteryx handles well and are ready to build population-level or near-real-time monitoring infrastructure. Requires more technical setup than Alteryx but provides substantially more capability at scale.
For teams already running Alteryx workflows, Alteryx has embedded AI capabilities that extend what those workflows surface without requiring a platform change. Auto Insights automatically identifies the most significant drivers of change in a dataset and generates plain-language narratives explaining what changed and why -- surfacing anomalies that a standard workflow would flag as a number but not explain as a pattern. The generative AI layer also supports workflow building assistance, helping less experienced users construct more complex logic by describing the outcome they want.
Strongest fit for teams with existing Alteryx investments who want AI assistance without a new platform decision. Not a replacement for Fabric if the goal is large-scale or real-time monitoring infrastructure.
The Data Access Prerequisite
The technology investment and the data access conversation are not sequential. They are parallel.
No tool in this framework delivers its value without reliable data access. The most sophisticated continuous monitoring platform produces nothing useful if it is fed data that has not been validated, or if audit cannot self-direct the data queries that the work requires. Resolving data access is not preparation for the technology investment. It is part of it.
